Rapid Deployment: Newmont Utilizes Trailblazer® Conveyor to Meet Tight Deadlines at SAG Mill

The Challenge

Newmont Corporation’s Phoenix Mine in Nevada, a significant operation producing gold, silver, and copper, was tasked with increasing the capacity of its milling operation by establishing a secondary crushing circuit. The goal was to reduce the feed size to the SAG mill, which would potentially boost its capacity.

However, a major challenge was the need to rapidly convey material 500 feet from the secondary crusher to a stacker feeding the pebble bin. Traditional stationary groundline conveyors would require a lengthy setup time, potentially delaying the project by four weeks or more—time the operation could not afford.

The Solution

To meet the tight deadlines, the Phoenix Mine turned to a novel solution: the Trailblazer® Conveyor, a portable groundline conveyor designed and manufactured by Superior. This one-of-a-kind system includes 500 feet of fully-belted and assembled conveyor that can be quickly deployed from road to working status in about an hour.

 

The Trailblazer Conveyor’s design allows it to fold out in an accordion fashion from its towable chassis, with minimal crew required for setup. This rapid deployment capability drastically reduced the potential downtime associated with installing a stationary conveyor. Newmont also worked closely with Superior, who provided on-site assistance to ensure the system was set up precisely.

We first saw the Trailblazer Conveyor in operation on YouTube and contacted Superior Industries to see it in person. We couldn’t believe that a small crew could install a 500-foot conveyor in about an hour and actually run it!

The Results

The implementation of the Trailblazer® Conveyor at the Phoenix Mine was a success, allowing the mine to keep the secondary circuit upgrade ahead of schedule. The new system enabled the operation to convey material from the secondary crusher to the stacker efficiently, adding an average of 150 more tons through their SAG mill each hour 

The quick setup of the Trailblazer Conveyor minimized downtime, saving the mine four weeks or more compared to traditional conveyor systems.
