Frac Sand Industry

Silica sand was historically used and consistently produced for golf courses, glassmakers and some industrial consumers. Then, in about 2010, demand dramatically increased as oil and gas producers discovered the durable, crush-resistant material. Overnight, frac sand production became the new gold rush!

Headquartered in Western Minnesota, Superior Industries was well-positioned to benefit. During the early days of the market’s expansion, a majority of frac sand came from the Upper Midwest…just hours from our largest manufacturing operation.

Frac sand producing pioneers visited our facilities, we brainstormed how to fulfill their needs and grew together. By the middle part of 2010, Superior supplied more than 75% of the conveyors used in frac sand mining.
