Engineering Notes

How It's Calculated

Stockpile height is calculated from conveyor length and incline angle. The calculator estimates conical volume and, for radial stockpiles, adds the volume associated with the selected radial arc. Estimated weight is calculated from total volume and material bulk density.

Calculation Assumptions

  • Conveyor length is measured along the conveyor, pulley center to center; the incline angle is measured above horizontal.
  • Stockpile geometry is approximated using the entered material angle of repose and a level base.
  • Radial volume depends on the entered sweep angle; conical stockpiles do not use the radial arc angle.
  • Estimated short tons are calculated as cubic yards × 27 × bulk density (lb/cu. ft.) ÷ 2,000.

Intended Use and Limitations

Results are preliminary estimates of gross stockpile volume and material weight, not surveyed inventory or guaranteed usable storage capacity. Actual pile shape, ground conditions, material distribution and bulk density may affect capacity. The radial calculation uses a simplified Superior-specific approximation, including a special case at a 37° angle of repose.
