Our History

1972

Neil Schmidgall builds his first portable plants in his dad’s gravel pit, then decides to bet on himself and start Superior Machinery.

1974

Neil and his wife, Linda, fire up their International tractor and crawl to Kansas to haul home secondhand idler equipment—at a blazing 20 MPH.

1975

After a winter that buried the region in 20-foot snowdrifts, Superior builds its first indoor warehouse. Because progress doesn’t hibernate.

1976

With their sand and gravel operation sold, Neil and Linda go all-in on manufacturing. No more juggling, just full-time focus on building something big.

1982

Superior builds its first paint line using equipment salvaged from Arctic Cat. A bankrupt snowmobile maker helps power the next chapter.

1986

A King Air plane is added to the fleet, slashing travel time and helping Superior show up for customers faster than ever before.

A fire torches the old paint system, but the rebuild upgrades everything including fiber-optics, powder coat, and infrared curing.
