Morris, Minn. – Superior Industries, Inc., a U.S.-based manufacturer and global supplier of bulk material processing and handling systems, has expanded blow bar metallurgy options for its Sentry® Horizontal Shaft Impact (HSI) Crushers, giving aggregate producers and recyclers more ways to match the wear part to the material they’re crushing.

By expanding available combinations of manganese, chrome alloy levels, ceramic enhancements and heat treatments, Superior can better match blow bar performance to the crushing circuit, feed material and operating conditions.
“Wear life is naturally one of the first things operators consider when selecting a blow bar, but the longest-lasting blow bar isn’t necessarily the best blow bar if it isn’t right for the application,” says Superior's Crushing Product Manager, Jarrod Adcock. “It’s about balancing abrasion resistance, impact resistance and operating conditions to achieve greater uptime at the lowest cost per ton.”
HSI crushers encounter a wide range of materials and operating conditions. A primary crusher may see large feed directly from the rock face, while a secondary machine may process more controlled feed. Recycle applications may involve reclaimed asphalt, concrete and potentially tramp metal. Abrasiveness can also vary significantly from one site to another.
Superior’s approach begins with selecting a blow bar appropriate for the general application, then evaluating actual operating conditions and wear performance before moving to another metallurgy if warranted. That strategy prevents producers from paying for a premium metallurgy they don’t need or selecting a bar that is too brittle for their application.
“You could buy the most premium blow bar available, but if your application doesn’t need it, you’re spending more money than necessary,” says Adcock. “The economics go beyond the purchase price, too. A bar that wears prematurely means more frequent replacement, more labor inside the crusher and more production time lost to maintenance.”
With expanded options, Superior can help operators better match Sentry HSI blow bar metallurgy to the application, then fine-tune the selection based on performance, wear life and budget.
