Challenge
The company required optimum material delivery and stockpiling methods for more than two million tons of aggregate during a two year road construction project.
Solution
The dedicated 62-car unit train unloads into a surge pit, with material being fed to a 240 foot Superior overland conveyor, which then feeds an automated TeleStacker Conveyor for fully or partially desegregated, high-volume stockpiling. The unloading of single-size stone from the entire unit train (6200 tons) can be completed in six hours. The combination of effective rail transportation with customized material handling allows the company to meet its production goals while reaching a cost savings by unloading 62 rail cars once a week versus ten cars each day.
Quote
“Without a TeleStacker Conveyor, we handle the material twice as much, and we wear out our loaders twice as fast, said general manager, Mike Fisher. “Plus, there is the cost of maintaining a staff for unloading and stockpiling each day.”
