Challenge
While good solutions in certain applications, traditional wing pulleys were constantly disrupting the flow of material at Triad’s coal prep plant in southern Indiana.

“Our old pulleys always filled full of coal,” said Scott Newberry, plant superintendent. “The material would fall to the top of the bottom side of the belt, get crumbled up and eventually, the pulley would get bigger and bigger.”

An oversized pulley, full of material, is often the root of many conveyor complications. In Newberry’s case, the buildup was causing his belt to tighten and it started walking back and forth. The result was a heavy price to pay in both time and dollars.

“The crooked belt was wearing our skirting and causing lots of headaches,” Newberry said. “At $25 a foot and 20 feet per conveyor, it’s not cheap to replace, especially when we’re changing it out at least once every other week or so!”

Solution
“Right now, we just have one installed, but from now on every pulley we install will be a Chevron wing pulley,” Newberry said. “That’s what we’re going to start using as our standard.”

In just four months on the job, Triad’s new Chevron wing pulley has reduced their commitment to maintenance around the pulley zone from lots to none.

“The worn skirting led to lots of spillage,” Newberry said. “In a 24 hour period we were spending two to three hours a day on cleanup. Now with the Chevron wing pulley, we’re down to none and we haven’t touched our skirting in four months!”

“It’s quiet, there’s less cleanup and it stays in constant contact with the belt,” Newberry said. “I am 100% satisfied with our Chevron wing pulley.”
